Stay-at-Home Day Seven, Wednesday 1 April 2020: Stone Seven

I keep the stones already presented in this Series in a glass bowl in my office, on top of a bookshelf next to the window. If you have not already seen it, the first Post is Stay-at-Home Day One.

Stone Seven comes from Birdlings Flat, near Christchurch. Broadly speaking, I think it is a jasper. But there is an unusual depth to the stone – you can see into it and see a number of levels of white and red and silver:

The white patches are quartz and seem to be deeper, while the red is probably iron (which gives jasper its red colour) and seems to be floating in a transparent layer.

Sometimes the light catches silver streaks in the stone which appear to be at or near the surface. It could be that these are a kind of iron oxide, the kind that makes up the typical silver of hematite stones:

Similar stones can be found on the internet, such as here and here.

An eye-catching and fascinating stone!

The next Post in this Series is Stay-at-Home Week One, Stone of the Week
