Stay-at-Home Day Ten, Saturday 4 April 2020: Stone Ten

This is the tenth day that New Zealand has been at Covid-19 Alert Level Four, the highest alert level. Life has changed in unprecedented ways. The world is not the same, and won’t be for quite a while yet. Some of us are sitting it out reasonably comfortably, others are struggling with very difficult circumstances.

To turn to Stone Ten. I have no idea what kind of stone this is. I found it on Birdlings Flat over a year ago. It’s a bit unusual for me to pick up such a stone because it’s predominantly a dark stone, but I could see that there was potentially a few interesting brown patches in it. Once the stone was polished, those brown patches became very intriguing.

Stone Ten is the size of a $2 coin.

Stone Ten is a relatively small stone. Its high shine and darkness mean that it is very difficult to photograph as clearly as I would like. My camera had trouble getting good focus on it (using automatic settings) especially up close. I took photos outside  in the sun and inside away from the sun, then holding the stone in my hand and then placing it on surfaces.

And now for close-ups of those intriguing brown patches:

The next Post in this Series is Stay-at-Home Day Eleven, Sunday 5 April 2020: Stone Eleven.

  1. Did you ever find out what type of rock this is? I have one that is very similar to this from Birdlings Flat as well, but I’m a bit of an amateur at rock identification (despite having rock hounded for over 10 years now).
