January 2022, Stone of the Day #18 – It’s Black and White!

I find black and white stones attractive, though they are not very common. This one comes from a beach near Kakanui in North Otago:

It is 4.5 cms long, 3 cms wide and just a few millimetres thick. It has polished reasonably well, with but two or three tiny holes still in it. The vein running from top to bottom on both sides adds interest. Close-up views reveal that it has experienced some stresses in its life.

It might be a quartzite stone – a variety of types of quartzites are found on this beach near Kakanui (see Stone #11).
