I spent 3 1/2 hours on Gemstone Beach today, arriving at 9.30 am. and walked maybe half a kilometre past the Waimeamea River lagoon. The weather was good, being partly cloudy and warm. However, the lack of bright sunlight made photographing individual stones difficult at times, with reflections marring the stone’s surface. I found today’s Stone of the Day towards the end of my fossick:
One possibility for the origin of the orange shapes is that this stone is amygdaloidal, with original vesicles (small holes) being in-filled as water moved through them over a long period of time, minerals precipitating out.
The tide was low again when I arrived at Gemstone Beach.
