Driving south today, I stopped off just south of Timaru to eat my egg sandwich on the beach. This is a beach that I don’t always visit when passing but I have found some interesting stones there when I do. See Timaru South for the beach’s location and other details. Today I also collected 32 stones as I walked south from the carpark at the end of Scarborough Road to Mutu Mutu Point and back.
Below are featured eight of my finds. The first one is a type I have found on two or three other beaches as well, and I find its hue and composition very attractive. I think it might be a brecciated jasper. These stones tend to tumble polish well, partly because of the quartz in them.
Some nice dark quartzites can be found here, like this stone:
A previous dark quartzite find was Stone of the Day #21 in January 2022.
I especially like the green quartzites that can crop up here. These are two small ones I found today:
Two red finds, one light and one dark. I especially enjoy the different coloured veins in the second one.
Finally, two brownish stones with interesting detail within them:
Then it was back in the car to resume my drive to Kakanui…
The Post describing my first fossick at Kakanui is here. The first Post in this Series is here.
