“From Little Things Big Things Grow”

Atoms make up elements, elements make up minerals, minerals make up rocks, rocks make up continents and mountains and tectonic plates…

From little things big things grow.

Rocks eventually become sand, then sand gets compressed back into great formations of sedimentary rocks which may then become metamorphic rocks through further intense pressure and heat, becoming igneous rocks if melted at depth…

…and a little sand becomes symbolic of big matters when poured from one hand to another…

Paul Kelly “From Little Things Big Things Grow”
www.paulkelly.com.au  The story behind the song

Gather round people, I’ll tell you a story,
An eight year long story of power and pride.
British Lord Vestey and Vincent Lingiarri
Were opposite men on opposite sides.

Vestey was fat with money and muscle,
Beef was his business, broad was his door.
Vincent was lean and spoke very little,
He had no bank balance, hard dirt was his floor.

From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow

Gurindji were working for nothing but rations
Where once they had gathered the wealth of the land.
Daily the pressure got tighter and tighter,
Gurindju decided they must make a stand.

They picked up their swags and started off walking,
At Wattie Creek they sat themselves down.
Now it don’t sound like much but it sure got tongues talking
Back at the homestead and then in the town.

From little things big things grow

Vestey man said, “I’ll double your wages
Seven quid a week you’ll have in your hand.”
Vincent said, “Uh-uh, we’re not talking about wages,
We’re sitting right here till we get our land.”

Vestey man roared and Vestey man thundered,
“You don’t stand the chance of a cinder in snow.”
Vince said, “If we fall, others are rising.”
From little things big things grow

Then Vincent Lingiarri boarded an aeroplane,
Landed in Sydney, big city of lights,
And daily he went round softly speaking his story
To all kinds of men from all walks of life.

And Vincent sat down with big politicians.
“This affair,” they told him, “is a matter of state.
Let us sort it out. Why, your people are hungry.”
Vincent said, “No thanks, we know how to wait.”

From little things big things grow

Then Vincent Lingiarri returned in an aeroplane
Back to his country once more to sit down,
And he told his people, “Let the stars keep on turning
We have friends in the south, in the cities and towns.”

Eight years went by, eight long years of waiting,
Till one day a tall stranger appeared in the land.
And he came with lawyers and he came with great ceremony
And through Vincent’s fingers he poured a handful of sand.

From little things big things grow

That was the story of Vincent Lingairri,
But this is the story of something much more,
How power and privilege can not move a people
Who know where they stand and stand in the law.

“The Secret Kissing of the Sun and Moon” by Hang Massive

A video of an instrumental piece, set in the grand geological landscape of Ladakh.

Wikipedia: Ladakh (“land of high passes”) is a region in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir that currently extends from the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram range to the main Great Himalayas to the south, inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir and its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture.

Wikipedia: Danny Cudd (England) & Markus Johansson (Sweden) met in 2010 in India and formed Hang Massive soon after. They were one of the first acts to become known for playing the Hang, a new-age percussion instrument, and quickly gained followers for their music videos, becoming “the epitome of the Hang”.

“Great Wall”

Seeing this great rupture in the landscape caused by the recent Kaikoura earthquake, and how it makes people feel small and feeble, brought to mind the song, “Wall of China/One Man”, by the Scottish group Runrig.

[Up-date: TV item on the earthquake features, including the wall-like rupture, as tourist attractions in 2023 – see here. At 1 minute 6 seconds, on the earthquake; at 1 minute 39 seconds, on the earthquake and contemporary tourism; at 2 minutes 11 seconds, on the “great wall”.]

In the song, the Great Wall of China is used as a metaphor for struggling against great odds, one person with great determination doing something important though small in the face of greater countervailing forces – “only the meek can break the strong”. It has been stated that the song refers to a man on a Scottish island building his own road because the local government never got round to doing it.

They say the wall of China’s seen from the moon
They keep building empires to immortal fools
But where the world goes small you stood alone
To face Goliath and the might of Rome

Where the rock sets hard your arms hit strong
Digging out your road ten thousand paces long
Fragments of survival in the driving rain
With the blood and tears that bear your name

On and on, the meek the strong
On and on, the meek the strong

They built the wall of China with a million men
Thought that broken promises would wear you thin
But they didn’t count on things they couldn’t see
One island man with heart of steel

On and on, the meek the strong
On and on, the meek the strong
On and on, the meek the strong
On and on, the meek the strong

One man to change the world
One word to bring it down
One stand to right a wrong
Only the meek can break the strong
Only the meek can break the strong

“How long?” 8 November 2016

Photos from trip to South Island, February 2016:

Till we lay these weapons at your feet, Lord
How long? How long?
Till we call all hatred obsolete, Lord
How long? How long?
Till we walk like lovers through Bethlehem
How long? How long?
Till the lion lies down with the lamb, Lord
How long? How long?

Too late
I know it’s not too late
To wrestle with this angel
Higher and higher
Don’t let go
Higher and higher
Before we know
How does it end?
How does it end?
We’re all riding on the last train
Trying to find our way home again

Till we wash the blood from the hands of our fathers
How long?
We’re all sisters and brothers, sons and daughters
How long? How long?
Our eyes all shine in different colors we cry, Lord
How long?
Our dreams our tears are all the same by and by, Lord
How long? How long?

Too late
I know it’s not too late
To climb up Jacob’s ladder
Higher and higher
Don’t let go
Higher and higher
Before we know
How does it end?
How does it end?
We’re all riding on the last train
Trying to find our way home again

It’s not too late

“The Wild Places” – Where I feel blessed

“Aurora Nova” and “The Wild Places” by Dan Fogelberg

I was walking alone through the lofty San Juans
With a heart full of light and a head full of songs
I was thinking of time and how much it will cost
To recapture the souls that we surely have lost

In the cities and towns there are millions who dream
But the traffic’s so loud that you can’t hear them scream
There’s a heaven on earth that so few ever find
Though the map’s in your soul and the road’s in your mind

So many mountains before us, so many rivers to cross
Where is the wisdom to bring back the vision we’ve lost?

Can we gaze with the wonder of children
Into the deafening night?
Has it gotten so dark that you cannot remember the light?

When you sleep on the ground with the stars in your face
You can feel the full length of the beauty and grace
In the wild places man is an unwelcome guest
But it’s here that I’m found and it’s here I feel blessed

“Love By Satellite”

Remembering an old friend and chess partner and backyard cricketer, David Parker, still a great musician, and taking the opportunity to look down from satellite with fondness on some great New Zealand places, such as Riverton, Birdlings Flat, and home (near Karapiro)…

“Love by Satellite” by David Parker

Look out of sight on a moonlit night,
You can feel it breathing,
The night is breathing
Sending messages across the sky,
Written(??) on the air, the one receiving
I wonder if it’s cold tonight,
I want to be the one who’s holding you tight
I send my love by satellite
I send my love by satellite

Operator, would you clear the line?
I want to tell my baby that I miss her
Want to tell her things are going fine
But I really need to hug and kiss her
Won’t you tell her that it’s cold tonight
I want to be the one that’s holding you tight
I send my love by satellite
I send my love by satellite

Can you hear me on the air?

And all the stars, Venus and Mars,
I may as well be the man on the moon
You’re so far away
You’re so far away
You’re so far

Send my love by satellite

I send my love by satellite
I send my love by satellite…

Can you hear me on the air?
Can you hear me on the air…

I send my love by satellite
I send my love by satellite

“It Dawned on Me” – I’ll light a beacon

001

“It Dawned on Me” by Dave Dobbyn

There’s a black blue front stole the west horizon
Under ocean song hear the tolling bell
On the seventh wave rides my aspirations
They will break, for sure, all my dreams to tell
It dawned on me
It dawned on me
It just dawned on me
This must be what your heart reveals

Blood red bloom pohutukawa
The black dunes hiss with the grasses’ breath
I’ll gather my driftwood and light a beacon
It’s for you I cry, it’s for you I burn
It dawned on me
It dawned on me
It just dawned on me
This must be what your heart reveals

And hey! It just dawned on me for the first time
This must be what your heart reveals

It dawned on me
It dawned on me
It dawned on me
This must be what your heart reveals.

“Isn’t that what friends are for?”

Friends are for sharing the delights of beach-walking, for annoying them with the latest treasure-stone you have found, for helping you to carry the extra weight back home, for saying “Ohhh!” when you show them the polished end-product….

“Isn’t That What Friends Are For?” by Bruce Cockburn

Heavy northern autumn sky
Mist-hung forest — Dark spruce, bright maple
And the great lake rolling forever to the narrow gray beach

I look west along the red road of the frail sun
Where it hovers between shelf of cloud and spiky trees,
Receding shore;

The world is full of seasons; of anguish, of laughter
And it comes to mind to write you this:

Nothing is sure
Nothing is pure
And no matter who we think we are
Everyone gets his chance to be nothing

Love’s supposed to heal, but it breaks my heart to feel
The pain in your voice —
But you know, it’s all going somewhere
And I would crush my heart and throw it in the street
If I could pay for your choice

Isn’t that what friends are for?
Isn’t that what friends are for?

We’re the insect life of paradise:
Crawl across leaf or among towering blades of grass
Glimpse only sometimes the amazing breadth of heaven

You’re as loved as you were
Before the strangeness swept through
Our bodies, our houses, our streets —
When we could speak without codes
And light swirled around like
Wind-blown petals,
Our feet

I’ve been scraping little shavings off my ration of light
And I’ve formed it into a ball, and each time I pack a bit more onto it
I make a bowl of my hands and I scoop it from its secret cache
Under a loose board in the floor
And I blow across it and I send it to you
Against those moments when
The darkness blows under your door

Isn’t that what friends are for?

“Nothing but the sun…”

“Nothing But The Sun” by Runrig

In there, Out there, In there, Out there…

Then I began to see the sun and the moon
As I wandered round in orbit on this land that I called home
No Messiah up in the sky, that I could ever see, that I could ever know
To find my soul

Standing in the face of the gale
A raging night on the island
Passed an old man with a dog on a hillside
Head bent in the weight of years
Headed back indoors, lost myself in the T.V.
Three women in a kitchen in Chechnya
Staring at the world with frightened eyes

All I had done below the sun would count for nothing in the turning of the world
When there is nowhere left to go, you walk alone and watch the void
Eclipse it all

Nothing but the sun
Nothing but the sun
Nowhere to run
Nothing but the sun

“Yellow”

“Yellow” by Coldplay

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah they were all yellow

I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called “Yellow”

So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah, your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know, you know I love you so
You know I love you so

I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do
‘Cause you were all yellow

I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know
For you I’d bleed myself dry
For you I’d bleed myself dry

It’s true
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do
