February-March 2022 Fossicking Trip: Stone of the Day #5, Kakanui Clear-Veined Stone

On this trip, Tuesday 15 February was a travel day. I drove from Kakanui in North Otago to Gore in Eastern Southland. As I passed Moeraki, the odometer in my car recorded 1,000 kms so far. My day’s two fossicking seesions yesterday at Kakanui (see the Post on Stone #4) were very productive so today’s Stone of the Day was collected then. It looks like a jasper but could be a quartzite.

It was the fine clear veins in the stone that attracted my eye on the beach:

Four other stones I found on the beach yesterday:

During my afternoon fossick yesterday, I walked in the opposite direction from the morning’s fossick.

I walked northwards as far as a small grouping of rocks, about one kilometre from where I parked my car. These rocks, the tallest standing about one metre high, seem to be broadly similar in composition to the bottom two stones above, the dendritic stone and the fossilised sea floor stone (see this Post for more about fossilised sea floor stones). There is some variation among these rocks, as shown below.

The next Post in the Series, on Stone #6 from a Slope Point beach, is here. The Index to all the Posts in the Series is here.
