Southern Sojourn 2023(40): Follow-Up Fossick With Chrissy, Gemstone Beach/Te Waewae Bay, Sunday 9 April

Chrissy and I followed up yesterday’s fossick with another one today, spending five hours on the beach in fine sunny weather. The waves seemed to have “sorted” the stones better than previously, in terms of sizes of stones on different pasts of the beach. For whatever reason, we had a more productive fossick, finding quite a range of colourful stones, though not many poppy jaspers and only a handful or so of hydrogrossular garnets.

One of the stones I found today was a semi-spherical brecciated jasper:

Two of the larger stones collected today, both 5.5 cm long:

Eight smaller stones – these are often among the most colourful and complex stones on the beach, and they go well in the tumble barrel:

  1. Thanks for letting me tag along again! It was a much better fossick than yesterday – it reminds me that it’s not ideal to fossick when you are on a time limit! And I have a nice little collection of Hydrogrossular garnets now! Love that blue tinged one you gave me – looking forward to tumbling that one – it was a spectacular find!
