Southern Sojourn 2023(3): The Trip South – Friday 20 January, Kakanui

Day Three of my trip south from Whanganui, on my way to Riverton Aparima, was spent mainly on Kakanui’s Seadown Beach. (Day One is covered in this Post.) I had done a 30 minute fossick on Thursday night upon arriving in Kakanui. Then, with Tracey Kidd, I did another two fossicks today, spending about five hours on the beach. The stones in this Post come from those three fossicks.

I was lucky enough to find a type of stone I had become aware of last year, one full of tiny fossils. A Scottish rockhound, John Taylor, had noted on my previous find that it was “similar to a Danish Fossil Okkergelber Hornstein made up of bryozoan”. It is only by looking closely at it that the tiny fossils can be seen.

Again I found a number of quartzites, one of them being quite stunning, with unusual circular features. Here are three quartzite finds:

Another two quartzites, one being a yellow one with an unusual white patch, the other being brecciated in part:

Four other stones I found today:

My next fossick, two days later, was at Gemstone Beach, Orepuki, Southland. An Index to the “Southern Sojourn 2023” Series is here.
